 Volunteer

The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program relies heavily on volunteers to reach more youth, lead educational programs, coordinate activities, and manage clubs and groups. There are several roles a volunteer can serve which work with personal and family schedules, areas of expertise, and amount of time a volunteer is willing to contribute. County Extension Agents provide support to volunteers through training, curriculum resources, and opportunities to be engaged as a volunteer.

 How to Be a 4-H Volunteer

A person 18 years or older may serve as a volunteer; however, in order to serve as an adult overnight chaperone, a volunteer must be at least 21 years of age at the time of a 4-H event.

To serve as a volunteer, one must apply by setting up a profile and completing a volunteer application online via 4-H CONNECT. All 4-H volunteers must be screened through the Youth Protection Standards Program, which includes a criminal background check. Based upon each individual’s role as a volunteer, additional requirements may exist, such as completion of a Child Protection Training. Upon acceptance as a 4-H volunteer, volunteers should consult with the County Extension Agent to find a position that meets their interests and the needs of the county 4-H program.

 Awards and Recognition

Each year, the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program provides awards and recognition for various individuals and groups that provide support to the 4-H program. All awards are presented at the Salute to Excellence Reception during Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station, Texas.

 Reporting

Volunteers are doing great things in the 4-H program! In order to assess the impact volunteers are making, it is important for County Extension Agents to know the great things volunteers are doing to make a difference in the lives of youth. Having this information also enables County Extension Agents to report the numbers and results, so that it is shared with the Texas Legislature. The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program has two reporting options for volunteers to use. Volunteer can use either system they prefer or have access to. To determine which system works best for you please review the Volunteer Reporting Document below. Regardless of which system you use we do ask that you do not report the same event in both system, resulting in a duplications of numbers.

 Volunteer Conference

Each year, the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program coordinates an educational conference for volunteers. In 2014-15, the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program will be sponsoring a virtual volunteer conference on a quarterly basis (November, February, May, and August).
